As the closing ceremony nears India bagged other gold medals. This time was in boxing. Paramjeet Samota (+91kg) brought some cheers for other boxers and the Indian fans on the last day by winning scoring a hat-trick at the Commonwealth Games 2010. In the final Samota tossed out his rival from Trinidad’s Tariq Abdul Haqq from the ring.Samota’s left hook was too heavy for Haqq that he could not recover from the blow. The kick was so hard that it opened a gash, leading to blood coming out from his upper lip.
This was not the only victory of the day. The fans were already celebrating the triumph of Suranjoy (52kg) and Manoj Kumar (64kg). Earlier in the evening they had won gold medals for India.
When Haqq and Samota stepped into the rings then the former was looking threatening. From the start he showed aggression and it appeared that Samota would have difficulties standing against him. Besides, Haqq was 15 pounds heavier than Samota.
However, after the pounding he left the ring crying. Interestingly, Samota celebrated his win by beating his chest a couple of times. He sent a message that it is not strength that decides a fight but it is will that makes the difference.
After the defeat Haqq was devastated. He said: "I was really expecting this gold medal. I wanted to be the one to carry it back for my country. I didn't understand the whole fight. At the end of the first round I was a bit baffled by the score of 2-0. I wanted to create history. I threw so many punches. I was surprised that I was given only one point. I didn't believe the Indian scored. I know I have a good defence." Despite Haqq showing good defense it was Samota who finished him off with a flurry of blows.
